FROM MONTREAL WITH LOVE
Tracy Biddle in collaboration with Emergency Communities present From Montreal with Love, a hurricane victims relief fundraiser.
Katrina was one of the worst disasters to hit the United States in decades. In its wake, millions of people are left without homes, food or shelter.
The crisis is ongoing.
Laura Paul, a volunteer hailing from Montreal, is in New Orleans now, working in collaboration with Emergency Communities - a grassroots, on-the-ground relief organization that started the Made with Love Cafe and Grill. The volunteers have already served over 100,000 meals to thousands of returning residents. They provide food, clothing, and comfort for returnees from this awful storm. But more importantly, they provide a safe, warm space for the community - a space filled with compassion, love and hope.
From Montreal With Love is a one night event that will gather Montreal's better known talent to raise money for Emergency Communities. It is common knowledge that New Orleans plays a significant role in the history of music in North America. The very rhythm we tap our feet to today, regardless of what kind of music it is, was born from this very place. How better to pay tribute to New Orleans than by gathering some of Montreal's best for one night of music.

Confirmed bands:
Colectivo
The Cockroaches
Dibondoko
United Steel Workers of Montreal
People's Gospel Choir

We will also be presenting the premiere of the documentary "INTENTCITY" by Montreal filmmaker Saroj Bains.

Particulars:
When: August 29, 2006
Where: The Saint Catherines, 30 St Catherine St West
Cover charge will be donated to EMERGENCY COMMUNITIES

We want to raise money to support Emergency Communities and their volunteers who continue to donate their time to the Katrina hurricane victims.
We need your help.
If you are willing to donate your time, talent, contacts or other, please feel free to contact tracybiddle@videotron.ca

Lo's first China blog... and not my last...

15 shows in 8 days, 6 airports, 5 airlines, 44 hours of flying time, crossing the Date Line twice, insane jet lag plus 12-hour time difference, 16 days above 30 degrees Celcius (86 Fahrenheit), one sunburn, 13 minutes of mortal fear from horrible turbulence, 1 piece of re-warmed KFC probably taken from the garbage! newspaper & television coverage, 2 CDs sold, student model gear (if any), friends in high places, great meals, great hotels, wonderful and helpful people, unbelievably cute kids, culturally void Vegas-style spoon-fed entertainment, incredible Chinese folkloric music and dance, uncanny openness, noticeable disparity in education, financial comfort and attention spans, many heads turned! And last but not least, two weeks I will never forget!

WOW WOW WOW

What an absolutely amazing experience! One that I wouldn't trade for anything!

I didn't have many notions about what to expect in China before leaving, so I went with an open mind, ready for anything. Unlike some of the boys, I didn't take notes while we were there, so most of this will be a little disorganized (and based on the photos I took!) DISCLAIMER: anything at all that might seem like complaining is NOT... It's merely a fact, and as you will see when I reach the end of my China Tour diaries, everything was smoothed over and worked out by the end of the tour! It's not unheard of to get little surprises on the road!!! You just deal with them and do your best despite anything... Why? Because you love what you do... you love your music, and don't want it to suffer because you don't have the right gear!

We arrived on April 29th at night, checked in and went out for our first delicious meal together. We would have the next morning to relax, but had to be at soundcheck at 2PM to make sure everything was ready for us. We had been told not to bother bringing any gear (amps, drums, keyboard, etc.) because each venue would provide a full backline. We got to the club "Infinity" on time and the first thing we saw was this 5 foot high poster featuring a great photo of Dan I had sent. We were called the Magnetic Band. It was funny. Nothing was ready and none of the gear promised was there yet. We were told there were guitar and bass amps, and that the drums were on the way. While the guys waited for the drums, Dan and I went to pick up a power transformer (because this also was not there.) We were driven to a very wide street completely strewn with electronics stores on either side. It was sensory overload for me, seeing the huge signs and all those people! We picked up a small consumer sized transformer that said it was good for 100 Watts and brought it back to the club. This was 3 hours later because traffic was insane, and the store was quite far from the club. Shenzhen is a very big city. It was built only 28 years ago, so there is nothing old about it. The first 5 days we were there, we only saw 3 people over 40! When we got back to the club, the drums weren't there yet so we waited a bit more and set up the other stuff. As it turned out, there were no amplifiers, and the power transformer was over-rated. It over heated and we had to ask the club to scramble to find another one (which they thankfully did.) The drums showed up and they were Century brand, including the cymbals! The skins were new factory skins! We had a similar experience in Europe when Mike had to play on Millennium cymbals (unbelievably poor quality metal/plastic compound that sounded awful!) Anyway, the Century were not much better, luckily Mike brought his amazing Meinl hi-hats (purchased in Europe so he wouldn't have to use those horrible Millenniums!) The bass and guitar plugged in direct and we were checking by 6PM. There were no monitors so I had to rely on the sound that was coming out the speakers aimed in many directions throughout the club. This made my job a bit tough, but not as hard as Raz who couldn't hear a thing he was playing. We went for a great meal together just across the way and came back around 10PM to play. The bar had done its job, the place was filled with people eager to hear what these Canadians were offering. The show opened with a 5-minute percussion/drum solo from Mike. It was really cool,. he started out using chopsticks then moved on to brushes and finally sticks. We played two sets that night and were very well received! We sold one CD and T-shirt to a guy in a band, and many people were thrilled to hear what little Chinese I did know (there was a collective gasp followed by warm applause when I said "Ni Hao" (hello.) The place was a very modern, almost futuristic nightclub with cool décor. The bathroom area was really neat; it was a large round room at the back of the club. Each door was a mirror with a small sticker where you would push to see if it was locked. Inside was a very big stall (I guessed that because everywhere was so overcrowded, they like to have space in their private time) also covered in mirrors all round. In the middle of the big room was the communal sink with motion sensors so that when you stepped up to it, one little fountain would turn on. There was a flat screen TV so you could see what was going on in the other room on the small, tall stage. The DJ booth was very cool. It looked like a CD, the disc around the DJ had lots of visuals going on in it (it was like a TV screen) and the DJ stood in the middle of that circle and you could watch him spin! Along the back wall were many different screens with different things going on (cartoons, light shows, etc.) The bar offers a fruit plate (watermelon, apples, tomatoes and yummy little jell-o type shots) to each table and brings many beers in an ice bucket, filling glasses quite often. Oh, and yes, tomatoes are often served as dessert with sugar on them, quite delicious!

So this was our first gig in China! We packed up after midnight, and Mike held up the snare drum whose coating had mostly come off after only one gig!! Oh boy, this was not a good sign... Mike said the kick drum pedal and skin would also probably break in the next few days!! As Mitch pointed out, these drum brands that name themselves after long time periods don't usually last more than a few minutes!! haha... We went back to the hotel and out for another late night meal, very tired, but satisfied that we had done well considering we didn't have some of the crucial gear we requested on our technical list emailed weeks earlier. We hoped we would get better gear in the other venues since we were told each venue was responsible for providing a backline. We would have to rise early the next day to go check out Window of the World where we would be playing for the next 5 days.

DAY ONE done...

Photo Album

oh, and Raz posted his tour diaries with some photos as well...

our show in montreal at petit campus (sat jan 28th) was amazing. the night was opened by the entertaining "synthetic folk hero" of toronto. he used to live in Montreal, so it was fun to see his homecoming!
between the two bands, we had great tunes playing as DJ "Amyl Nitrate" (whose birthday it was that night) was spinning for us.
i'd had a hard day as i'd been running around to pick people and stuff up, and as always before a show, i was nervous (frantic)... not to mention that when i got up at soundcheck to test my megaphone, i realized it was busted. i don't have a protective case for it, and i guess something heavy leaned on it and broke the on/off switch! marc st-laurent who was our sound tech for the night saw that i was upset about it, and he opened it up and soldered the switch to short circuit my megaphone to permanently "on"... phew... he wen above and beyond the call of duty to save my night! then, seconds before we went on stage, i realized that my video camera was sitting on stage, plugged in (being charged)... meaning no one would be filming the show... i was upset about it, but the guys said "forget it, we're here to play music"... and the instant the music started, i realized they were right, and all that silliness melted away and on we went to perform a beautiful hour of great music! the crowd's reaction was priceless as they savoured every note and shared a great night with us.
the most recent show was a showcase in toronto at the horseshoe on tuesday feb 14th (yup, valentine's day). my van transmission had recently quit on me, and so, of course, i was upset (hahaha, are you seeing the pattern here?) in fact, i was downright depressed, trying to figure out what i'm going to do to continue providing transport for the band... it makes me very sad on one hand because the van has provided 5 years of faithful and safe travel to the band, we've done over 250,000 km together! and on the other hand, it puts a huge amount of stress on my shoulders as i don't have the financial means to fix the van, much less buy another one... anyway, needless to say that my mind was somewhere else on our trip to toronto in our rented minivan. fortunately, i knew that our former rehearsal space mates "mission district" from montreal were playing the same night so i arranged for us to borrow their drums. we had to squeeze dan's cockpit into the minivan, along with raz's amp and mike's drum pieces. mitch lives in toronto, so he brought his own bass amp in his car (otherwise that would have been interesting!) there was just enough room for everything and we got to drive a bit faster than usual and made it in very good time. just as we rounded the corner to the horseshoe, we called in for our interview with skip on "ska party" on CIUT 89.5FM (tuesdays at 6PM) once that was done, we had a great soundcheck with brian at the controls. i've always loved playing at the horseshoe, the sound is always good and they have good gear to work with! dan and mitch got to load in around 7 (dan had taken the bus from ottawa to play!!) i was feeling a bit nervous (for a change - NOT) before we went on, i went downstairs to change into my dress and tried to get my mind off anything and everything. i have to stay, we put on a stellar performance that night! we played our hearts out and we created what we call our "bubble" - that's the place we get to when everything is just right... we had only 30 minutes to impress, and impress we did! raz's back vocals were right on and the little touches he adds on guitar were perfect. mitch was a wildman as always digging into his bass to pump out pure energy, and mike held the hole thing together with his signature solid and dynamic drumming, driving us up or down when the songs took us there. the new songs went really well and at the end of each song, you could hear a pin drop until we played the very last note, even in our fade-outs, and then wild outbursts from an audience taht was listening intently! the finale was unbelievable!!! to end off our short set in which no saxophone had been played as yet, we chose "this town's unbearable" and when dan pulled out his sax at the end of the song, you could feel the anticipation in the room... he began quietly playing beautiful melodies and climbed to such amazing heights and emotion... wow... i sound like a critic or publicist "two thumbs up"... but really... two thumbs up (and a pinky!) all the guys were super happy with that show! dan even said "it's a pleasure to spend twelve hours crammed on a bus for a show like that"
we stuck around to chat with people during "delta" (thanks to them as well for letting mission district use their keyboard stand instead of ours which was filled with dan's "cockpit" of gear) then, before the last band was into their second song, it was off to montreal to unload the van, return it to the rental agency, and get into the studio with mitch here in montreal (we are co-producing an album for a local band called "One Night Band")
so it's been a hell of a week (friday, i was the single driver for a band going to chicoutimi, 8 hours there, 10 hours back because of a detour - my transmission gave out uring that trip) and saturday, after a two hour nap, i was single driver to ottawa to play with Lo.Raz.e.pam (acoustic duo with Raz - guitar and vocals) opening for trip the off, and driving a couple of their guys to the show. i came home right after that show and i think sunday is just a blur, i must have dozed in and out of consciousness (haha) that led up to tuesday's trip to toronto...
what a long blog! maybe it'll make up for the occasional silence! and certainly it does let you in much more than ever before on what really goes on behind the scenes...
might i add that this week, a few of our songs appeared on Broadjam's top 10 ("pull it all apart" - MUCH music has our vide for "pull it all apart" by the way - is on the ROCK/POP top 10 by genre, and BOTH "pull it all apart" and "fool on impact" are on the quebec top 10 by region) their top 10's change almost daily though... still, that's nice. and if it sells 200 CDs, we can fix our transmission!!
:-) a girl can dream... so far they've all come true!!!
thanks for reading this far! and for being so magnetic!
:-)

this blog is identical to the blog found on our MySpace profile.

"So, how was New York?" she asked, excitedly.

"Well. Where to begin?"

It all started early on a Friday morning when the bus pulled into the Voyageur terminal in Montreal and out popped one tired Toronto boy. Fifteen minutes later, a cell phone rings and wakes an even more tired Montreal girl. It's not even 7AM yet, and the alarm is set for 8, so a little snooze was in order! Toronto Boy grabs the already made up hide-a-bed and gets a good 60 minute visit to dreamland, and an hour later, the kettle is boiling for a nice cup of tea to start this long day. An hour behind schedule right from the start, the entire band is in the van travelling Southbound on highway 15. It's a beautiful sunny morning as we pull up to the border.

Once South of the Border, the construction leads to a detour that takes us past the "Betty Beaver" truck stop. The legend is much better in your head, so let's keep it there! A half hour detour to pick up our gear turns into two hours, and now we're way behind schedule, stuck in traffic on the FDR... almost there... we don't know exactly what time we're playing and this adds a bit to Lo's anxiety. Who would have thought it could take 11 hours to get to NYC from Montreal? We finally pull up to the Knitting Factory at 9PM and make our way inside with our instruments, weaving through the sold out crowd to find our backstage area! It's not self-evident as there are three floors, each with its own venue and backstage. Through the commotion we see old friends from Mustard Plug and the Toasters, then on our way through the doors to our room, the Planet Smashers' merch area. Needless to say, we are playing a ska festival organized by the legendary NYC Toasters' frontman "Bucket" called "3 Floors of Ska."

We've made it now with over an hour to spare, but for some reason, Lo is nervous and a bit antsy. All the bands are playing ska-punk, save a couple in our room that play more traditional stuff (Coldspot 8 sounded good.) The sound seems pretty sketchy for some of the bands. But it seems to be for the louder bands, so we needn't worry too much. We set up our little merch display and hang out a bit before we play. Soon comes the moment we've been waiting for. The Hub City Stompers' bass player generously allows us to use his bass guitar and we're almost done with our line-check just after 11PM. A big fight had broken out right after the Stompers finished their set which cleared the room. People are now starting to trickle back in as we begin our set.

We played particularly well on this night, and all our songs go over really well. The audience is very open minded and enjoys what they are hearing. It's quite different from anything else going on that night - unique. The response is wonderful, and the band finds that comfort zone where it knows to just relax and do what it does. After all, that is what we came here to do. We get a lot of very positive comments after the show from other bands (# who tried text messaging for the rest of his band to come down because he didn't want to miss anything finally had to run up quickly on our second to last song so that his band would at least get to see us play a bit! ## who gushed that we were his favourite band of the night. MySpace friends Audio Fiction who enjoyed the set and would like us to play together in the future - as would we. And several other MySpacer's who discovered us on that night - sorry to Deb who had to leave before our late set!)

We got to hang a bit with some friends, at the end of the night, Coolie Ranks (former Toasters, Pilfers) who recognized Lo from her days with The Kingpins, spent some time with us talking about music (and King Apparatus) and his reunion show with the Pilfers at the Knitting Factory Nov 4th. We congratulated Bucket on the continued success of the 3FOS bi-annual event, and on the big band he put together for that night - a 4-piece horn section, keyboards, and guest MCs (incl. Coolie).

After a delicious sandwich from around the block, we head for home. In under 9 hours, we were back in Montreal. King Kong, Dan and Lo enjoy "lunch" waiting for Mitch's bus-ride home to Toronto! And then it's off to sleepy-land for all of us! All that for less than one hour on stage. YES! THAT is what it's all about. And we went, and we kicked, and we will do it again!

Another MySpace friend came down from Montreal specially to shoot the show, check out Photos. Thanks to many people... John for driving Cat, Megan and Leah. The 3 girls for their help, and photographic skills. Clarke for bringing the booty. Previously unknown MySpacer's who came looking for us on MySpace when they got home! and found us!! And for the people who have and will be extending gracious offers for our speedy return to NYC!

Hi everyone.
Lo and the Magnetics will be interviewed this coming Sunday night August 28th on CHOM-FM 97.7 in Montreal or listen live on the internet at CHOM from 9PM to 10PM Eastern Time (New York City time). This will be plugging our debut album, as well as our upcoming all ages/licensed show in Montreal August 30th.
The program is called "Made in Canada" and the host "Too Tall" is one of the few, if not the only, commercial radio DJ's we know who actively supports Canadian independent talent! So please support his show, if you like what you hear, please call in or send an e-mail in support of the Magnetics and in support of his show!
Thanks
Merci.
